Things you must see when you are in Chiang Rai

The white temple (Wat Rong Khun)

Just south of Chiang Rai, off Highway 1, there is one of the most amazing and stunning temples you will find in Thailand. Called officially the “Chapel of Wat Rong Khun” it has become to be known simply as “The White Temple”. This is a modern form of architecture which you don’t often see in temple grounds. It was designed and built by Thailand’s premier artist Chaloemchai Khositphiphat. The attention to detail is remarkable and you do need to spend some time here studying the beautiful artwork.

Doi Tung Royal Villa

This beautiful royal residence was built for the late Princess Mother in  celebration of her 90th birthday in 1990. After the Princess Mother passed away, the Palace has continued to draw many visitors to  admire it’s beautiful gardens.

Doi Tung Mae Fah Luang Garden

You find these gardens just in front of the Royal Villa. This large flower garden includes a rock garden, a fountain, a palm garden, ornamental plant section and a handicraft centre.

Doi Tung Royal Villa and Mae Fah Luang are best visited in winter when the numerous flowers are in full bloom and the forested mountain is full of shades of green.

Hill tribes

Over a 100 years ago, the so-called hill-tribe people migrated from the south of China into what are now  Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. There are 6 major tribes of which the Karen and Akha are best known to the outside world. The main profession of these tribes is farming and these people have their  own culture, religion, language, art and dress.

Akha for instance live in raised houses, in which one small room is set aside for prayer to pay respect to the ancestors.

In some Karen groups it is the custom to wear golden rings around their neck to prevent wild animals from biting them in the throat .

Golden Triangle

Every guidebook seems to have a different view of the evolution of the term 'golden triangle' but most do agree that the term applies to the opium growing region covering northern Thailand, eastern Burma and western Laos.

Opium production has been illegal in Thailand since 1959. Thanks to a highly successful crop substitution program undertaken by the Royal Projects Foundation established by His Majesty King Bhumipol, opium production has largely been eliminated in Thailand

The area is full of beautiful natural scenery and ancient temples. At the point where the borders of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet a huge monument is resurrected. You will also find the Opium museum there. When you climb to the temple “Wat Phra that Doi Pu Khao” on top of the mountain you have a magnificent view over the Mekhong river. With clear site you can see all the way to China.
